Atelier Extramuros: demonstrating the value of upcycling waste wood into furniture
Description
Atelier Extramuros was set up in 2007 and upcycles wood waste into one-off office furniture.
As well as simply producing attractive tables and shelving solutions, the workshop has a strict ethos:
- Quality: each item is handmade by skilled carpenters
- Circular economy: the furniture is made from waste wood which is recovered from Veolia's sorting facility in Gennevilliers or directly from clients, or is donated by the workshop's partner, Kinnarps. Care is taken to produce as little waste as possible during the production process and all varnishes and paints are environmentally friendly.
- Social impact: In addition to having apprentices and trainees, Atelier Extramuros trains people who are finding it difficult to break into the labour market in the skills needed to be carpenters. It has set up Extramuros Association which raises awareness about how waste, specifically wood, can be a valuable secondary raw material, promotes social ties and crafts and helps equip vulnerable communities with the skills needed to find a job.

Main results
Atelier Extramuros puts circular economy principles into action by reusing waste material and minimising waste during the production process. It educates people on how stuff dismissed as rubbish can actually be used to make new items and equips them with real skills.
