CIRCWASTE and PlastLIFE: a Finnish platform providing a wealth of useful information
This platform provides information and updates on two key projects:
CIRCWASTE is a seven-year LIFE IP project that ran from 2016 to 2023. It aimed to promote the efficient use of material flows, waste prevention and new waste and resource management concepts. It had 20 partners and 10 funding organisations and was coordinated by the Finnish Environment Institute and largely funded by the EU LIFE programme. It helped compile a directory of circular good practices, selected ten Finnish municipalities championing the circular economy and explored circular case studies in Finnish regions.
PlastLIFE is an ongoing project (2022 to December 2029). It aims to promote a sustainable circular economy for plastics. The goal is to deliver a sustainable circular economy for plastics in Finland by 2035. It is part of the EU's LIFE Programme and has a total budget of around EUR 20 million.
A group of partners led by the Finnish Environment Institute are working together to develop methods to:
- reduce the environmental harm, litter and unnecessary consumption caused by plastics,
- make the recycling of plastic waste more efficient,
- replace fossil raw materials and utilise recycled plastics, and
- develop the analysis and risk assessment of harmful substances contained in plastic waste.
PlastLIFE contributes to the implementation of Finland's Plastics Roadmap, which aims to achieve a breakthrough in the circular economy of plastics in Finland by 2030.
The platform contains information on the circular economy concept and how Finland is working to deliver it, the now ended CIRCWASTE project and the ongoing PlastLIFE project.
