REkrabička: deposit-based food packaging
REkrabička offers a returnable packaging system designed for restaurants, cafés and canteens. This system represents a fundamental shift from the linear model to a circular approach where packaging remains in a continuous loop, effectively eliminating single-use waste at source rather than managing it after creation. REkrabička (for food )and REkelímek (for drinks) are reusable containers made from durable, 100% recyclable polypropylene, produced locally in the Czech Republic to minimise carbon emissions. They are sturdy, do not leak and keep food hot!
Rekrabicka's deposit-based system (80 CZK for food containers, 50 CZK for cups) ensures high return rates and creates economic incentives for consumers to participate in the circular model, while the company handles collection, washing and redistribution. All users have to do is rinse the container and return it to one of the partner locations (there are currently 537 across Czechia). Partners can use the company's app to manage the collection and return of deposits.
Each container can be used up to 400 times. This reuse model dramatically reduces resource consumption – each container effectively eliminates 400 single-use alternatives, addressing the estimated 54 tonnes of disposable food packaging waste generated daily in Czechia.
The initiative was co-funded by the European Union.
Each container can be reused up to 400 times, and each one prevents approximately 10-15 kg of single-use packaging waste during its lifecycle.
REkrabička and REkelímek are used by over 500 partner restaurants, cafés and canteens, serving thousands of customers daily. The system has expanded from its initial pilot in Prague to locations across Czechia including Brno, Karlovy Vary and Olomouc, demonstrating the scalability of circular packaging systems and their potential to transform food service operations nationwide.
Containers are BPA-free, leakproof, dishwasher and microwave safe, and can withstand intensive commercial washing processes and maintain food safety standards through multiple use cycles.
