SCALE-UP project: community-driven bioeconomy development
The Horizon Europe SCALE-UP project aims to help various stakeholders develop sustainable and circular bioeconomy projects.
It helps regional multi-actor partnerships (businesses, governments and policy makers, civil society organisations and researchers) identify and scale-up innovative, sustainable bio-based value chains that build on regional resources.
The overall aim of the SCALE-UP project is to adapt, implement and evaluate tools to help regional actors overcome bottlenecks towards fully exploiting bioeconomy potential. In this way, it will promote regional, rural, local/urban and consumer-based transitions towards a sustainable, regenerative, inclusive and just circular economy and bioeconomy across all regions of Europe.
There are six projects underway:
- Northern Sweden's forestry residues are a significant biomass source. They can be utilised for bioenergy production and other value-added products such as chemicals.
- Mazovia, Poland is a major apple producer, generating substantial side-streams. These can be converted into wood products, fertilizers and functional food ingredients.
- Arc Atlantic, France produces straw and fibre crops, such as flax and hemp. These can be used to produce paper, textiles and construction products.
- Upper Austria's food processing industry generates a wide range of food by-products which can be utilised for biogas production, chemicals and functional food ingredients.
- Strumica, North Macedonia generates abundant agricultural residues, such as crop residues and manure which can be used for composting.
- Andalusia, Spain generates olive residues which can be converted into high-value chemicals and fertilizers.
- SCALE-UP will extend existing infrastructure in the six SCALE-UP regions and establish platforms for innovation support.
- The project provides 21 free online training sessions focusing on the bioeconomy. All sessions are available in English, with AI-powered translations for local languages.
- Training materials are available on the project's multilingual website where the project publishes relevant documentation.
- During the project, events will be organised to feed into the multi-actor partnerships.
