Nordic Sustainable Construction: creating and sharing knowledge across the Nordic region and beyond
Nordic Sustainable Construction is a programme set up in 2018 under the Nordic Council of Ministers. It aims to create a green transition with green growth in the Nordic societies by working toward carbon neutrality and a sustainable, circular and bio-based economy based on knowledge, innovation, mobility and digital integration.
The programme will engage Nordic lawmakers, public and private actors along the whole value chain of construction in Denmark, the Faroe Islands, Finland, Greenland, Iceland, Norway, Sweden and Åland.
Phase 1 (2021-2024)
Five work packages focused on Life Cycle Assessment and data, circular business models and procurement, sustainable construction materials and architecture, emission-free construction sites and capacity building activities within reuse of construction materials.
The knowledge created during this phase is available and the results are set out in the Toolbox for Future Proof Construction.
Phase 2 (2025-2027)
Nordic Sustainable Construction will continue with three new work packages to create best practice guidelines for the industry, mapping industry structures and practices to find improved solutions:
- Climate: Creating knowledge and tools for efficient climate regulation implementation in construction, promoting nature-based solutions, and adapting regulations to climate considerations
- Circularity: Developing regulatory measures for better use of existing spaces and materials, harmonising standards to reduce climate impacts and improving craftsmen's skills.
- EU: Providing an overview of EU initiatives affecting the built environment and gathering Nordic input to influence EU policies with Nordic perspectives.
Nordic Sustainable Construction's website also hosts a knowledge centre intended to be a source of inspiration, information and the latest knowledge about sustainable construction. It includes publications, webinars and presentations from previous Nordic Climate Forums for Construction.
