ECOALF: Upcycling the Oceans project collects marine trash and turns it into quality yarn
ECOALF is a Spanish fashion company with a very keen interest in circularity and sustainability. It focuses on developing innovative methods to produce fabrics that do not hurt the planet. It also runs the Upcycling the Oceans project which aims to "collaborate in cleaning up the oceans, to give a second life to recovered marine waste and to raise awareness of the problem in order to prevent it".
This project began in September 2015 with the support of the HAP Foundation. ECOALF convinced Spanish companies to collaborate in this project and share their experiences of recycling different types of waste (PET bottles, fishing nets, used tyres, etc.) and the knowhow acquired through their international alliances with recycling specialists.
Over 4000 fishermen work with the project, delivering the waste caught in their nets. This is taken to containers in ports and then on to treatment plants. The materials are sorted and recycled, with the plastic transformed into pellets and flakes. By extruding and spinning the pellets, PET plastic is turned into polyester yarn which is used to produce fabrics with properties and design of the same quality as top-of-the-line non-recycled materials.

- In 2015, the project covered one country and nine ports and collected 23 tons of plastic waste. In 2023, it covered another five countries (Thailand, Greece, Italy, France and Egypt) and 72 ports and had collected a total of 1704.3 tons of waste.
- As of 2025, the project involves over 1000 boats and 4000 fishermen and collects 290 tons of waste a year.
