SISTERS project: Systemic innovations for a sustainable reduction of European food wastage

Description

SISTERS is an EU H2020-funded project that aims to design, implement and promote innovations to address bottlenecks at each stage of the food value chain. The end goal is a systemic reduction in food loss & waste.

  • Production: configurate a modular, easy-to-use, and broadly applicable Short Chain Platform (app) for selling producers' surplus food directly to local consumers.
  • Logistics: optimise smart, reusable containers to transport food, implementing a sensors kit to track food safety and quality conditions.
  • Processing: optimise integration of enzymes in the biobased materials to deliver a home compostable solution; scale-up and validate the most promising material at semi-industrial scale and some at industrial level.
  • Marketing: analyse the relevance of SISTERS containers and packaging for wholesales/retailers; formulate good practice guidelines to diminish food loss and waste.
  • Consumption: develop a labeling scheme for consumers to help them make an informed decision regarding food loss and waste.

Bringing together 18 partners from eight EU countries, the project will address the issue of food waste and its impact, and encourage more sustainable consumer behaviour. It has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under Grant Agreement No. 10103779.

Main results
  • First European short chain platform for farmers to sell their discarded produce;
  • Smart and reusable food containers designed to diminish food losses during transport, and maintain bulk and packed food in ideal conditions with new accurate sensors allowing immediate response;
  • Bio-based and home-compostable packaging solutions will be created, reducing the negative impact on the environment;
  • A Seal of Excellence will promote sustainable practices among retailers;
  • QR and dynamic labelling incorporated into the packaging is expected to raise awareness among retailers and consumers about sustainability.
