Exponential demand for critical materials, driven by the energy transition, may trigger supply chain problems. Circular economy business models could help decouple the renewable energy sector from material consumption. However, with major economic, regulatory and financial barriers, the sector's transition sector towards a circular economy still has a long way to go.
This report, commissioned by the Green Purposes Company and prepared by the Gate C consulting firm, proposes an action plan for the renewable energy sector which will enable it to be fully aligned with the principles of a circular economy and to reap its benefits. It is critical that in helping to address climate change, the renewable energy sector does not inadvertently drive environmental problems elsewhere.

Carsten Wachholz joined the Foundation in 2020 after spending two years working for the European Investment Bank on Corporate Responsibility and another four years working for the European Environmental Bureau on the first EU Circular Economy Action Plan. Carsten leads the Foundation's newly established Brussels-based team supporting the development of circular economy policies at EU and international level (e.g. G20, OECD), in close collaboration with the Foundation's systemic initiatives on plastics, fashion and food.
Circle Economy has partnered with the International Labour Organisation (ILO) and the World Bank Group initiative Solutions for Youth Employment (S4YE) on jobs in the circular economy. S4YE is a multi-year initiative to generate and share evidence and data for a better understand of how the circular economy can help lead to a more just and inclusive world.

This WCEF Accelerator Session on "Growing the Role of Circular Economy Hotspots and Hubs" will showcase successful examples of circular economy hubs from different continents and explore good practices for creating and managing circular economy hubs and strategies for engaging stakeholders. It will also discuss circular diplomacy and identify immediate action items and plans for future collaboration among circular economy hotspots.
Many consumer products pose significant waste management challenges and end up in landfill or incinerators. Using findings from an European Environment Agency study, the event "Headache fractions in mixed municipal waste" on 11 May will discuss these issues and what needs to change to increase recycling and promote circularity.
