This booklet describes selected best practice initiatives for the collection of small waste of electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) and portable batteries implemented within Europe. It aims to inspire producers, producer responsibility organisations and distributors of electrical and electronic equipment (EEE) and batteries, and policy makers in the organisation of similar initiatives.
At the beginning of this work stands the question of what to consider best practice for the collection of small waste of WEEE and batteries in the context of this report. For this purpose the key criteria have been defined (scalability, replicability, etc.) and at least one of them has to be fulfilled by each of these initiatives for it to be included in the collection.
The online national Register of Electronic Equipment Repairers (Nationaal Reparateursregister) has been launched in the Netherlands. It enables consumers and (retail) professionals to find professional and skilled independent repairers and refurbishers of electronic equipment who work nearby.
The Nordic Working Group for Circular Economy is a working group under the auspices of the Nordic Council of Ministers. NCE's mandate includes contributing to activities and exchanges of information that will promote the transition to acircular economy in the Nordic Region.
NCE also wishes to influence the EU and global actors, for example by helping to identify solutions that will reduce consumption of raw materials, waste, emissions and energy by recycling products, including for new purposes.
NCE carries out projects on different topics related to the circular economy.
This report explores the potential of circular business models within the electronics industry, examining three models across four industry segments and throughout six lifecycle stages. The data utilized in the analysis stems from diverse sources: research papers, public databases, internal benchmarking, collaboration with external/internal partners etc.
Projections and estimations are grounded in a comprehensive approach, blending historical data extrapolated with logarithmic adjustments. Baseline data for lifecycle stages is constructed from product Life Cycle Assessments, considering both carbon footprint and cost perspectives. The focus is on capturing the significant impact of approximately 20% of products, which are estimated to constitute around 80% of their respective segments.
CircularInvest and DEFINITE-CCRI are launching the Circular Investment Readiness Network, a Europe-wide community of practice to help circular economy projects overcome development and funding challenges.
The initiative will officially kick off online on 21 November, from 10:00 to 12:00 CET.
The transformation into a circular economy entails factoring resource flows into production, sales and consumption processes and thus massively reducing the use of materials (raw or otherwise), as well as the volume of waste and the strain on the environment.
